Rice, Spice and All Things Nice – Dishoom, Edinburgh

My best friend was back in town so it was time to celebrate, and we thought of nowhere better to try than the recently opened Dishoom Edinburgh, on St Andrews Square. Dishoom opened it’s doors on 5th December 2016, and I have heard nothing but great feedback since – I was dying to go!

Inspired by the Irani cafés that once enjoyed iconic status in Bombay, Dishoom have created a mouth-watering menu with options to suit every taste. The menu is designed around small plates, so luckily you don’t have to choose just one!

I really wasn’t sure what to expect when dining at the renowned Bombay Café, but I was blown away as soon as I arrived. Stepping through the door to be faced with open kitchens, heavenly smells, and smiling hosts – a foodie’s dream! I was led upstairs where I was reunited with my friend, who had a chilled bottle of Sicilian white wine waiting (can you tell why we’re such great friends?).

We were kindly offered complimentary crackers and dips whilst being talked through the menu by the extremely friendly and professional staff, who were able to provide us with fantastic recommendations and how many dishes we should order each. We decided to order the whole menu… Okay, I exaggerated, but there was A LOT of food!! Between us we shared Dishoom Calamari, Keema Pau, Black House Daal, Dishoom Chicken Tikka and the Sheekh Kebab – great choices. I can easily recommend everything we had, but I particularly enjoyed the Calamari and Chicken Tikka.

As it was a girls afternoon out, it would be rude for us to not order any cocktails, so we were swayed by the East India Gimlet, and the Monsoon Martini. The Monsoon Martini was Dishoom’s personal take on my favourite – the Espresso Martini. The twist? Chilli liqueur and black walnut bitters. It was lovely and I would definitely order again, however, I would warn against tasting the chilli powder sprinkled on top – it will blow your head off :)! If you would like to visit Dishoom just for drinks, they also have a separate bar area downstairs which is open until 3am.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough, it would be a great visit for any occasion!
